Friedrich
Thiele
Born in Dresden in 1996, Friedrich Thiele has established himself as one of Germany’s most remarkable young cellists, winning numerous prestigious national and international awards. Among his accolades are the 2nd Prize, Audience Prize, and Prize for Best Interpretation of the Commissioned Work at the ARD International Music Competition 2019, as well as the German Music Competition Prize 2019. He also received top honors at the International Instrumental Competition Markneukirchen (2019: 2nd Prize, Audience Prize, Orchestra Prize), the Ton & Erklärung Competition in Munich (2017: 1st Prize), and the TONALi Competition in Hamburg (2015: 3rd Prize and Audience Prize), which launched his international career.
Thiele has appeared as a soloist with leading orchestras including the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the National Theatre Brasília, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Kammerakademie Potsdam, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar in Caracas.
He has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Herkulessaal, and the Gasteig Munich.
Since 2021, Friedrich Thiele has been the 1st Concertmaster of the Cellos at the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden. A passionate chamber musician, he performs regularly in established chamber music ensembles, including a duo with his sister, violinist Charlotte Thiele, as well as a cello duo with Christoph Heesch. He has also collaborated with prominent artists such as Igor Levit, Julia Fischer, Tabea Zimmermann, Antoine Tamestit, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, and Nils Mönkemeyer at major international festivals.
He studied with Peter Bruns at the University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Leipzig, completing his Bachelor of Music at the Hochschule für Musik “Franz Liszt” Weimar in 2016, and earned his Master of Music in 2023 at the Kronberg Academy under Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt.
Friedrich Thiele plays a cello by Francesco Goffriller (c. 1740), generously on loan from the Stradivari Foundation Habisreutinger-Huggler-Coray.
